History of Bingo

Bingo evolved from an Italian lottery game known as “Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia” that was played around 1530. France added playing cards, tokens, and reading the numbers aloud in the 18th century. In the nineteenth century, the game was widely used in Germany to teach youngsters spelling and multiplication tables.

The game was first established in 1929 by a travelling carnival near Atlanta. Originally, it was played using dried beans, a rubber stamp, and cardboard. Edwin S. Lowe, a toy merchant in New York, witnessed the players’ interaction.

Lowe brought the concept to New York and tried it out with his friends. He used dried beans, a rubber numbered stamp, and card board to play the game. His friends adored it. After winning, one of his players supposedly made bingo history by exclaiming “Bingo” instead of “Beano.” The original Lowe Bingo Game was available in two sizes: a 12-card set and a 24-card set. Bingo was a big success.

After Bingo became famous, a Catholic priest from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania approached Lowe. Bingo has grown in popularity in churches. By 1934, almost 10,000 bingo games were played weekly, and now, more than $90 million is spent on bingo in North America alone.

A bingo caller chooses the numbers for each game. The bingo caller announces numbers from 1 to 90 that have been generated at random by a computer, a random number generator, or a mechanical draw machine. Some bingo callers still draw numbers from a bag, as they did in the beginning. However, most professional bingo rooms will not employ this method in 2020.

Once a number is selected, the bingo caller “calls” it using a range of traditional and modern bingo calls that frequent players get accustomed to.

When a player spots a number on their bingo card, they daub it with a bingo dauber. A bingo dauber is a large round felt tip pen with a large round felt tip pen. This is now computerized in certain bingo venues. There is an automatic daubing technique in online bingo.

After marking enough numbers to win a prize, you must shout “Bingo” loudly to attract the attention of the bingo caller. You lose if you do not say bingo before the next number is called.
